You Said What?! “Yes?”

Well, hello friend and fellow readers. Yes, it’s me again. I’m back to share a few more nuggets with me. ~Eleanor Roosevelt once wrote: “You must do the things you think you cannot.”

So, for that long-term goal that you have, that you are procrastinating on, or the one you can’t seem to figure out how to get started, just say ‘yes.’ We sing a song that says, “God wants a yes, Oh yes. Yes, to His will, yes to His way. When the cares of life weigh you down, just know that He’s making you. He’s molding you. Come what may it’s still ‘yes’ yesss.”

Matthew 5:37 says: But let your ‘yes’ be ‘yes,’ and your ‘no’ be ‘no.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.”

People sometimes zoom in on the strangest things. Now who would have thought to write a message on the nuances of the word ‘yes?’ Not me! But yet, here I am. Everyone knows what the word ‘yes’ means, right? Well, let’s pause right here and think about what yes really means before you read on.

I’ve done a little research, and I found out that ‘yes’ is verbalized in several ways. There is even a non-verbal acknowledgment that can be used. When I first thought about it I said, now that doesn’t make sense. Everyone knows that yes means okay, I agree, that’s good, an acknowledgement, I accept etc. You have my permission! But, everything has a history, an origin.

Some years ago Shonda Rhimes wrote a book using the title Year of YES. The premises of the work was to acknowledge that she never said ‘yes’ to anything…speaking engagements, personal appearances, even to herself. Saying yes seemed to be quite a challenge for her. The act of say yes is not only life-changing, but also lifesaving. Is it healthy to always say yes? Let’s sit with that for a moment.

Now, just think…saying yes can put us in some pretty precarious positions. Are you sure that you can handle what comes with using that one little word- “yes?” The bottom line is that ‘yes’ means exactly that ‘yes’. I’m in agreement. I will. I’m sure. To many open-ended questions there can be only one simple, or maybe not so simple, answer. You can say yes or no. So ‘yes’ has a partner, who says ‘no,’ and who can keep us from some positive outcomes. So, I have something that I need to do, but fear is a big distractor. I must launch in headfirst and try it anyway.

“If anyone offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes - then learn how to do it later!”

~Richard Branson

“In the space between yes and no, there is a lifetime. It’s the difference between the path you walk and one you leave behind; it’s the gap between who you thought you could be and who you really are; it’s the legroom for the lies you will tell yourself in the future.” ~Jodi Picoult

We’ll talk again later. But until then your wished love, joy, and peace. And of course, that’s a ‘YES!’ ~Barbara G
