Staying Healthy

An alarm went off in my head that sounded like the Big Ben Clock in London England. This alarm in my head went off just as if I was about to sit down in my comfortable chair and enjoy one of my favorite T.V. programs. My eyes became very heavy, and I felt as sleepy as a baby. I stood up abruptly in front of my chair and began to take a very good introspective look at myself.

I had overlooked my daily exercise routine for the past few days, for one reason or another including getting caught up in making wellness calls to family members and friends. Another factor to consider was my sleeping schedule was off; I was going to bed in the early morning hours; averaging less than six (6) hours of sleep every day. No wonder I was feeling so sleepy. Staying up past midnight on a regular bases is not healthy for me and I know better. I am used to pushing myself now and then but without proper rest, that’s a real NO! NO!

I used to work with several senior centers, hospitals and cancer centers in Michigan teaching Tai Chi and Qigong as well as lecturing about holistic health. I dropped the ball this time when it came to practicing what I preached. As a result, I had a very good hard talk with myself. I went through a refreshers course about a holistic approach to health.

I got deep and heavy about my responsibility to my mind, body and spirit for myself and my loved ones. I must take care of myself for my wife, family and friends. I don’t take my responsibilities lightly especially when it comes to staying healthy. My heart, brain and immune system to name a few areas of concern, must be in tip top shape to the best of my ability at all times.

The effects of skipping breakfast, especially if you are a senior, as I am, can make a world of difference in your daily routine. Not overlooking the daily exposure to stress and emotional tension we must find and work on ways to minimize the stress we encounter. Most internal organs regenerate themselves after midnight, give them a rest. Staying healthy is a journey, so maybe consider start winding down every night at the same time. This within itself will have a positive overall effect on your body.
